The WORMSRUS team at Organic Waste Solutions have developed an easy to install kitset to re-introduce earthworms into soil (ideal for raised gardens).
The ‘WORMELOO’ system can also be used to consume ‘pet poo’ along with small helpings of household food scraps.
The ‘WORMELOO’ is a cylindrical device, which is to be partially buried in the garden.
The 500 Tiger Worms provided with the WORMELOO are in their element in the additive-enriched organic material mix placed on top of the bedding mulch. The composting worms quickly add their castings to this mix while converting food scraps as they’re added, to enriching the decomposing mixture. Meanwhile the 25 earthworms in the kit settle down to consume and mix in the worm castings with the surrounding soil attracting & breeding earthworms, and introducing beneficial micro-organisms and nutrients to the soil.
Because the more sensitive composting worms – usually Tiger & Blue worms – live in amongst organic matter, not in the soil, they stay inside the cylinder where they enjoy the dark, coolness and moistness they need to stay alive. They do not survive in the garden, while earthworms live in the soil and, being hardier, prefer to survive in more isolated and extreme conditions.
However, composting worms have modest appetites. All this growing team of 500 needs in their WORMELOO each week is a portion fed daily of a total per week of 2-litre ice cream container of a mixture of food scraps cut to thumb-size pieces and pet poo when available. Compost worms also like moisture. After the initial soaking of the bedding a total of one litre of water a week should be applied to flush out their castings, rendering this material digestible for the earthworms.
When using the WORMELOO for pet poo, use in only in an ornamental garden.
Faeces from treated animals (intestinal worms & antibiotics) should be avoided until a week after treatment.
While the WORMELOO is a simple domestic model suitable for home gardens and pet owners, the team are also addressing the potentially more urgent problem of growing enough worms to repopulate earthworm-deficient soils, adding essential nutrients to soil and restoring New Zealand’s reputation as a producer of top-quality animals and plants.
